Hair loss: a new look for menBy
The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new hair loss drug called finasteride, which is to be available as a prescription and for a one-month supply in the United States.
The drug is already sold under the brand name Propecia, and is being made available by Merck & Co., the maker of the drug.
Finasteride has been around for more than 20 years, with its patent expiry last December. It is the first of its kind to be sold over the counter in the United States.
"We're proud to be the first to offer this FDA-approved hair loss medication," said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
Patients can expect to see improvement in their hair density and thickness with the treatment, and there's also some hope for hair regrowth when taken for two months. It's also likely that finasteride will be available as a three-month supply in the U.
The FDA approved the drug in 1992, although it didn't become widely available until more than 25 years after its launch. Today, the drug is sold over the counter.
"Our goal with this drug is to make sure that we can treat male pattern baldness," said Dr. Tom Brokaw, director of the Office of Drug Evaluation.
There are several other medications available to treat male pattern baldness, including Propecia, Rogaine and Proscar.
Propecia and Proscar are approved by the FDA and work by blocking dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can cause hair loss.
Propecia is one of three available for treatment of male pattern baldness in men. The other two are available for only a two-month supply.
Finasteride, which has been on the market since 1992, works by blocking the effects of DHT on the hair follicles in the scalp. It is a type of medication that has been used for more than 20 years to treat male pattern baldness.
Finasteride also blocks the effects of another hormone known as luteinizing hormone, which can cause hair loss. As a result, the drug is effective in treating hair loss in men.
The FDA approved finasteride as a treatment for male pattern baldness in 1997.
The drug is not approved for use in women, and it isn't approved for use in women's health.
There are currently two prescription finasteride products available in the United States: Finasteride Daily is a prescription drug for the treatment of male pattern baldness in men aged 18-79.
The drug is marketed by Merck & Co., a division of Aventis AG. The drug is available as a one-month supply in the United States and as a three-month supply for men over the age of 18.
Propecia is only FDA-approved for use in the United States, but it's the only FDA-approved product that is available over the counter in the country.
Propecia is currently available in the United States through the online pharmacy PropeciaCare.com.
"We've seen that there is a lot of interest in finasteride," said Dr. David Kaul, director of the hair loss program at the American Academy of Dermatology, and the lead investigator of the clinical trials. "But it's important to recognize that there is still a lot of stigma about the use of finasteride as an effective treatment for male pattern baldness."
There's also been a recent push for hair growth medications to be approved as a prescription product.
Dr. Gail Mckenna, a urologist at the University of Michigan, said the FDA has been reviewing finasteride for over a year and believes that the drug is a good candidate for approval.
"What we've seen is that it's a little bit more expensive than the other products," she said.

While the prices quoted here are talk about safety, the FDA has not made a firm recommendation regarding where and how often Propecia might be prescribed. Propecia (also known by its brand name Proscar) is a medication produced by and released on Propecia's website. It is considered safe and effective when used as directed. Propecia works by inhibiting the ability of a cell to produce dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can cause male pattern baldness. When DHT is converted in the body, it causes the hair follicles to shrink and eventually lead to hair loss. So, by blocking the activity of DHT, Propecia allows the hair follicles to continue producing hair and continue growing hair. While Propecia is a similar drug to the well-known oral medication, it is generally considered safe and effective when used as directed. 1 The active ingredient in Propecia is finasteride. 1 In the absence of a prescription, many people can obtain Propecia throughistaniistaniistaniistani-trustedistani-trusted-trusted-trusted-propecia online. But because DHT is a type of 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, it can be beneficial for some individuals who are looking for a drug that may help prevent further hair loss. 1 The branded drug is Finasteride 1.
